CHRISTOFLE SILVER PLATED TRAY
Decorated with the insignia of Napoleon III and the Napoleonic Empire along with bees and ivy vines, France; Marked "328357"; 28 3/4" x 14"; Note: These trays, dating to 1859 or 1861, were ordered from Christofle to outfit the varied residences of Napoleon III, his court, and his extended family. A large service was ordered by Napoleon III in 1853-54. The use of silver plate in these trays is significant, as it reflected Napoleon III's efforts to promote the newest industries in France. Another rectangular tray and circular salver of similar design are in the collection of Christofle's Heritage Department. A rectangular tray is illustrated in illustrated in H.
